What Are Your Coil Characteristics?

What Are Your Coil Characteristics?

your hair has characteristics too! knowing your hair characteristics, like hair density or porosity, can help you take your hair care to the next level

this is important when speaking with stylist or choosing the best products for your coils. get into these coils characteristics and take time to learn more about your hair.

#1: hair density

hair density is how many strands of hair grow per square inch of your scalp. hair density impacts the volume and shape of your hair.

there are three main types of hair density: low, medium, and high. low-density hair has fewer strands per square inch, high-density hair has a lot of strands per square inch, and medium-density hair is somewhere in between.

hair density can also vary throughout your scalp, which is normal, fren! there isn’t an ideal density type so don’t feel pressure for a specific hair density.

#2: hair thickness

hair thickness refers to the width of a single strand of hair. you can have thick, medium, or fine kinks.

you can determine your hair thickness by comparing a single strand of your hair to a piece of thread.

if your strand hair is thinner than the thread, then you have fine hair. if your hair is the  same size as the strand, then you likely have medium hair. if it’s wider in diameter than the piece of thread, you’ve got thick strands.

there is no perfect hair thickness - it’s just about having a hair routine that is right for you.

#3: hair porosity

hair porosity is the hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. hair porosity affects how well oils and moisture pass in and out of the outermost layer of your hair (the cuticle).
there are three types of hair porosity: low, medium, & high

low porosity means that the cuticles are closer together, making it harder for moisture to penetrate the hair shaft.

medium porosity means that cuticles that are less tightly bound. moisture is able to penetrate the hair shaft.

high porosity means that cuticles are more widely spaced. moisture can easily penetrate the hair shaft, but may not be able to hold moisture for long.

knowing the porosity of your hair is important, especially thinking about how you moisturize your coils

if you aren't moisturizing your coils properly, this could lead to failed twist-outs!
okay, fren! it’s time for you to think how you can best care for your kinks based on your hair characteristics.
